Sleeve Volume In Banded and Non‑banded Sleeve Gastrectomy

To know the difference between sleeve volume in banded sleeve gastrectomy and non banded sleeve gastrectomy, let’s talk about each one.

Sleeve Gastrectomy:

Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical procedure to reduce the overweight. This procedure is typically done laparoscopically, part of the stomach is separated and removed from the body, leaving a tube-shaped stomach about the size and shape like a banana.

Why should you do Sleeve Gastrectomy ?

You can say that you need to do sleeve gastrectomy after you’ve tried to lose weight by improving your diet and exercise habits. Excess weight makes a lot of life threatening problems. therefore Sleeve gastrectomy is done to help losing the excess weight and reduce the risk of potentially life-threatening weight-related health problems, including:

● Heart disease

● High blood pressure

● High cholesterol

● Obstructive sleep apnea

● Type 2 diabetes

● Stroke

● Cancer

● Infertility

Risks:

Like major surgery, sleeve gastrectomy surgery have potential health risks, both in the short term and long term. Risks associated with sleeve gastrectomy can include:

● Excessive bleeding

● Infection

● Adverse reactions to anesthesia

● Blood clots

● Lung or breathing problems

Longer term risks and complications include :

● Gastrointestinal obstruction

● Hernias

● Gastroesophageal reflux

● Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)

● Malnutrition

● Vomiting

LSG and BSG:

There is no significant difference between BSG and LSG in weight loss. But in some cases, show more eating problems with more regurgitation, GERD, vomiting, and dysphagia in the BSG cohort than in the LSG cohort. Thus, the BSG is supposed to maintain better weight loss due to less sleeve dilatation and less food tolerance.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy:

This surgery is part of sleeve gastrectomy. This surgery takes out the part of the stomach that curves outward, called the fundus. After surgery, you have a smaller stomach. That makes you feel a little hungry and your stomach is full faster than before.

Reasons to consider LSG surgery:

There are some reasons make Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is better choice for you :

● If your BMI is more than 60.

● If you are older.

● If you have risk factors for surgery like heart, lung, or liver problems.

● If your BMI is about 40 to 50, your healthcare provider may recommend LSG as the first choice weight-loss surgery.

In the first 2 years after you have done LSG, you will lose between 40% and 50% of your body weight.

Risks of LSG surgery:

LSG is less likely to cause side effects. These include poor food absorption and stomach ulcers than other forms of weight-loss surgery. But there are some risks like:

● Leaking of stomach juices from area that stomach has been removed

● Bleeding

● Blood clot that forms in leg and travels to lungs and heart

● Narrowing of the inside diameter of the new stomach

● Infection

● Nutrients poorly absorbed

Banded Sleeve Gastrectomy:

Banded sleeve gastrectomy is one of weight loss surgery. It is reduce the size of the stomach by about 70%. This encourages weight loss as patients should feel full on less food. It’s done by applying a band around the upper part of the sleeve pouch to prevent its expansion, thats maintaining better weight loss. There is higher weight loss in the BSG cohort compared to the non-banded LSG cohort, and some reported weight loss rates after BSG equal to after RYGB.

Advantage of BSG:

● Simpler

● Reduces hunger pains

● Encourages fast and long term weight loss

● Encourages a healthier lifestyle

At the end we need to say some difference between LSG and BSG:

Sleeve dilatation after (LSG) causes weight regain (WR), (BSG) was proposed to prevent dilatation and reduce WR. BSG had significantly lower sleeve volume, significantly lower WR, and significantly lower FOOT TOLERANCE scores than LSG after 4 years from surgery; however, volume changes were not correlated with weight loss.
